Building Attention & Social Skills

Social interaction might not come naturally for some neurodivergent children. Strategies such as positive pairing and intensive interaction are brilliant for building trust and connection while developing social skills in a calm, child-led manner. Engagement and attention skills can also be further strengthened through the Gina Davis 'Curiosity Programme' and 'Attention Autism Sessions' (commonly referred to as 'bucket time').

Learning Positive Behaviour Strategies

At Neurokind, we see behaviour as a form of communication and expression. For many children who are non-speaking, challenging behaviour often occurs when they are unable to express their wants, needs or preferences. Together, we can work to identify the causes and triggers of your child's behaviour and to develop appropriate calming strategies, and alternative methods of communication and sensory regulation. We can also look at environmental modifications and adaptations.

Increasing Communication & Understanding

For children with speech and language difficulties/delays, we can implement high-tech, some-tech and no-tech communication systems including PECS (picture exchange communication system), coreboards, Makaton (signs used alongside speech), and other AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) methods. Your child's understanding and comprehension skills can also be enhanced and supported by using visual aids, prompts, schedules, now & next boards, social stories, choosing boards and reward charts. We can support the implementation, production and ongoing adaptation of these resources as required to meet the needs of your child.

Supporting Sensory & Physical Development

Sensory activities, play and exploration have many benefits for neurodivergent children. Sensory sessions provide your child with the opportunity to explore a range of sensory inputs and experiences allowing them to experiment with calming and alerting stimuli. These sessions can be tailored to fit your child's interests and are ideal for developing fine motor and gross motor skills. Our sensory sessions can also include 'Jabadao' which promotes body awareness and sensory circuits which can help set your child up for a calm, focused day. Please note that our tutor is not a qualified sensory integration or occupational therapist, however, she can support your child in developing new strategies for sensory regulation.

Developing Independence Skills

Tutoring sessions can support your child in developing independence skills relating to dressing, feeding, personal hygiene and toileting. Many neurodivergent children have difficulty developing toileting skills due to differences in their interoceptive awareness. Interoception refers to the ability to process internal sensations in the body such as hunger, thirst, temperature, tiredness or the need to use the toilet. We can design tailored programmes to support your child in becoming more independent and self-confident. Additionally, through our Food Explorer sessions, we can focus on expanding your child's diet as well as developing feeding, cutlery and coordination skills.

Accessing the Wider Curriculum

As a qualified teacher specialising in early years education, Morgan can deliver tutoring sessions that focus on key areas of learning and development from the EYFS Framework (Early Years Foundation Stage). We can provide sessions that extend beyond the three prime areas of learning and development (communication and language; physical development; personal, social and emotional development) and explore the specific areas of literacy (phonics, reading, writing); mathematics; expressive arts and design; and topics relating to our understanding of the world. Sessions can also meet the needs of learners who are accessing the Primary National Curriculum.
